“BUILDING INDEPENDENCE
On October 15, 2013, Friends Aware, Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony at its 1601 Holland Street location. The event launched the beginning of its “Building Independence” Capital Expansion Project – the next phase in providing exceptional services for individuals with developmental disabilities. This new opportunity allows for handicap-accessible upgrades, as well as much-needed training and vocational facility expansion.

The “Building Independence” Capital Expansion Project will provide…
• Positive and sustainable economic
impact to Allegany County.
• Increased number of full and part time
jobs to residents of Allegany County.
• Greater capacity to serve the vocational,
residential, and support needs of individuals
with developmental disabilities.

OUR NEW ADDITION
Monday, March 9, 2015 was Opening Day! Excitement was in the air as the buses pulled into the new handicap-accessible entryway for the first time and the doors opened to our new addition at the Friends Aware Life Enrichment Center. The Board of Directors and Staff welcomed everyone to their new work space and helped them get acclimated to their new surroundings.

The new 10,000 square-foot addition is complete with a handicap-accessible, secure entryway, accessible restrooms, work rooms, a confidential shredding room and conference space. Until now, Friends Aware’s entryway and bathrooms were not handicap-accessible, the building lacked a sprinkler system, and it did not provide adequate space. The $2 million project is being funded through grants and donations and is the first phase of the “Building Independence” Capital Expansion Project. Individuals moved out of their former work areas and into the fresh new space to allow for the renovation planning phase of the project to get underway. Additional funding is being sought to see the project to completion. Donations to the “Building Independence Capital Campaign” continue to be accepted and room naming opportunities are still available.
